Nepal had to struggle hard for a goal in the first half, though they never stopped attacking the Turkmenistan goal and creating magnificent chances. With such positive and attacking football, Nepal was bound to score eventually, and the Turkmenistan defense eventually gave way to Bimal Ghartimagar in the 2nd minute of the added time in the first half. A wonderful cross from Amit Tamang found its way to Bimal’s head and he didn’t make any fuss in turning it into a goal. The start of the second half wasn’t easy for Turkmenistan as they conceded another goal in the 51st minute. Bimal headed another cross, this time from Gaurab Budhathoki to take his tournament goal tally to 3. It was Dinesh then, in the 74th minute, his cross wasn’t gripped properly by the Turkmenistan captain and goalie Berdiav and conceded a rather embarrassing goal. Bimal Ghartimagar finally completed his hattrick and sealed the 4-0 win with a much impressive goal in a one on one situation against the keeper.

This win marks the entry of Nepal into a new era of football. Nepal has for the first time, qualified for the final round of the AFC U-16 championship. In their cruise towards victory, they never let Turkmenistan settle on the ball, and Turkmenistan never seemed to get a hold on the match. Nepal seemed to have full control on almost all sectors of the game. Turkmenistan, already out of the competition with two loses, started the game in a defensive mode, not wanting to leave Nepal null pointed. Nepal, on the other hand, had to win this match, as the other match ended with Bahrain defeating Iraq 2-0. With that, Bahrain had 6 points, and only a win would ensure that Nepal go comfortably through to the final round. And they did just that, leaving the Turkmenistan team distraught with good playmaking, continuous attacking from the two wings and making most of the chances that they created.
Nepal top the group with 7 points from two wins (2-0 against Bahrain and 4-0 against Turkmenistan) and a draw (2-2 against Iraq) top the table in group C. Nepal’s draw against the so-called strongest team Iraq after being 2-0 behind has been taken as a good sign, that the Junior Gorkhalis can perform even in very pressured situations. This, is a very good sign, for a good temperament is equally a required skill in football. All in all, the Junior Gorkhali team looks promising for a wonderful future, it was evident from the SAFF U-16 championship and now the AFC U-16 has shown that they can deliver their best.
Only the third time the U-16 team has reached the finals of AFC and we wish them good luck to perform well and shape the future of Nepali football.
CONGRATULATIONS to the Nepal U-16 team for the impressive performance throughout the competition. Hope to see some great football in the future days. JAI NEPAL!!!!
