Nepal (U 16) 2 - 2 Iraq (U 16): Match review

Today’s U-16 AFC qualifier match between Nepal and Iraq ended in a 2-2 draw. In a very entertaining match the visitors started well with 2 first half goals. Nepal came back in the 2nd half with 2 goals to draw the match. Nepal the underdog in the match performed a lot better than many expected, however, missed a lot of chances which could have won them the match.

The game started in a positive note when Nepal created chance in the first minute itself with a free kick. Iraq had a chance of their own when their forward shot just went past the post. The match was end to end. Nepal kept on getting regular free kicks but nothing came through it. Only few shots were hit by both the teams and it was all wayward. However, Nepal’s bad defending let Iraq score the first goal in 15th minute of the match. Husam Hasan with a close range shot.

The match continued and Nepal continued to threaten from free kicks but nothing came out of it. Bimal Ghartimagar was quiet throughout the game but came into life in 42nd minute when his shot from 25 yards just missed the post with keeper well beaten. However, it was Iraq who scored the next goal in 45th minutes through a counter attack.

First half goals:


With 2-0 score it seemed Nepal were out of the game. The Iraqi assistant showed 6 fingers to Nepali crowds claiming they’ll score 6 but Nepal’s revival started. 49th minute goal, a beautiful goal, by Bimal Ghartimagar made the score 2-1. It was all Nepal after that. Bimal missed a golden opportunity to equalize 2 minutes later. There were other shots in 75 minutes from Hemant which was saved.

However, Nepal struck from Corner when Anjan scored the goal from the header to make it 2-2. Iraq were shell shocked. Nepal kept on pressing and at 88 minutes, Iraqi keeper made a very good save from the shot of Hemant. And the match ended 2-2. A very good performance from Nepali side but disappointing that they could not win at the end.
